A word, a question, a sentence. So WHY is it so difficult to ask or think?
It’s concerning that people don’t question much these days. It’s a simple thing to do but requires more effort than most care to put forth. As an engineer, I’m curious by nature. I ask WHY all the time. Maybe it’s built into my DNA, but as a society we are losing the ability to think critically.
People trust apps, like Facebook, that have “Fact Checkers” but Facebook doesn’t have to explain why the fact was flagged false – partially, wholly or not at all false. So if I write “The sky is green.” Will I get fact-checked? If not, WHY not? The sky is blue. Are they not able to determine that this statement is false? It’s because it’s not important, it’s not contradicting the story they’re trying to weave and the view they’re trying to get you to see. Human capital, your eyes on information, is what is up for grabs and the biggest commodity these days. WHY?
People want a 10-30 second headline and then think they know what’s happening. If it’s on the internet, it has to be true mentality. Even if you read an article, blog or post that has some substance, people still believe what they read and don’t look into things further.
Just look at the bill/act that Gov. DeSantis got passed in Florida around education that makes it illegal for public schools from discussing or giving instruction about sexual orientation/gender identity from K-3rd grade. WHY did he think it was necessary to do so? WHY are people up in arms about putting this in writing? Think about the kid’s ages during these grades – 5 through 9 years old. Do you think that kids are mentally and emotionally able to truly process this information? They still believe in Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy for goodness sake!
WHY did this bill get called the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill? It’s catchy and leads you to believe that DeSantis passed a bill that literally makes it illegal to say those words. It’s categorically false, but since it causes divide and virtue signaling it works for those who use it. He’s been called names and categorized as someone who is homophobic. WHY? To try and control public opinion? Where are the fact-checkers on this statement? Who is determining what is and isn’t true?
My fear is without asking a simple question and understanding intentions and what may be fueling these things, it is making a society that breeds hate. Hate for having differing viewpoints that cannot be discussed anymore with respect and understanding. Hate for having differing belief systems where we try and walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. What happened to tolerance, understanding, and working to really know and hear one another? I think it’s still there. I know it’s there within my circle of friends, who don’t have the same views or opinions as I do. However, there is the susceptible segment of the population who says you’re either with me or against me and there is no middle ground. WHY would media do this? WHY would our own government want to create a divide? Start asking the question, reading multiple sources and stop taking things at face value! Investigate. Ask WHY? Educate yourself with information across all bias platforms and see how we are all being manipulated based on the money that’s pushing an agenda for one side or the other.
